Outstanding veteran and community member, Steve Sirois receives Governor's Award

Every year since 1990, the Governor's Award is given to outstanding veterans across the state. The recipients of the award are nominated by others and those chosen to receive the award are honored with an award ceremony and also with a flag, flown in their honor, at the Capitol. This year there are a total of 39 recipients of the Governor's Award, with Steve Sirois of Valier being one of those recipients. Steve was presented his award during a ceremony held on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Shelby Veteran's Memorial site by Governor Greg Gianforte. Steve was selected for this award due to his outstanding service in uniform and service to his community. Steve has also been a recipient of K9 Care Montana, receiving his dog, Dakota, almost a decade ago.

Award in hand, Governor Greg Gianforte thanked retired Corporal Steve Sirois, USArmy 82nd Airborne, for his service last Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 11.

"Steve was gifted a service dog named Dakota from our organization almost a decade ago," said David Riggs, K9 Care Montana. "We received most of the financial support for providing his service dog, at no cost, from the Valier/Cut Bank/ Shelby communities, therefor providing additional evidence of one of our favorite slogans, 'Together we make a difference.' 'They have already served us; it is time for us to serve them'."

Steve retired from his military career as Corporal Steve Sirois US Army 82nd Airborne and received a Bronze Star for his outstanding service in uniform. He was nominated for the Governor's Award by his wife, Chris, a Border Patrol agent in Sweet Grass. Since retiring from the Army, Steve has remained very active in serving his community in a number of ways, donating his time to other veterans and various organizations. He also donates his carpentry talents selflessly to many causes.
