The Valier Lady Panthers split a pair of conference games to open 2020 as they downed Sunburst before falling to the Hawks of CJI.
Friday against the Refiners the Lady Panthers jumped out to a 19-6 lead after the first quarter behind 11 points from Hannah Monroe. The local cagers managed just six points in the second stanza but led 25-13 at the half. Sunburst outscored Valier 21-13 in the third quarter and closed the gap to 38-34 going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Panthers scored 13 points in the final eight minutes to take the 51-46 victory.
Monroe led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points followed by Erica Ramsey and Emma Valdez who each chipped in 10 points. Kylie Christiaens scored seven, Hannah St. Goddard tallied six and Loni Orcutt rounded out the scoring with five points in the victory.
Saturday the Lady Panthers traveled to Chester to take on the CJI Hawks and trailed 15-12 after the first quarter. Both teams scored 12 points in the second stanza and CJI held a three point advantage at the half, 27-24. Valier went cold in the third quarter and trailed 40-30 going into the final eight minutes. Valier scored 17 points in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback and the Lady Panthers fell 54-47.
Monroe led the offense with 20 points followed by Valdez with nine. Ramsey scored eight points, St. Goddard and Kinley Kovatch scored three apiece and Amari CalfRobe and Orcutt rounded out the scoring with two points each.
The Lady Panthers are back in action this weekend as they travel to Augusta on Friday before heading to Simms on Saturday. Friday is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip off while Saturday is set to begin at 3 p.m.
