The Valier Schools board of trustees met on Tuesday, Feb. 11, and went into closed session to address a student discipline matter. The board reconvened into open session and approved the recommendation of Superintendent Matt Hauk to expel “SD#00-05” from extracurricular activities for the remainder of this season for violation of the Valier School’s Policy 3340 Extra- and Co-Curricular Alcohol, Drug and Tobacco Use. This was the fifth student disciplined under the policy so far this school year.

According to the draft minutes of last week’s meeting, members of the school district’s Housing Committee believe the best place for school district housing would be the lots on Chouteau Avenue because the utility hookups are readily available.

Prices were discussed for a two-bedroom home, a three-bedroom home and a duplex. Trustee Don Connelly made a motion, which was seconded by trustee Travis Lake and approved by the board to have the committee look into building a single-family home with the number of bedrooms to be determined by the committee.

Tim Hartwell volunteered to serve on the committee, which consists of Lake, trustee Robert Widhalm and Hauk. The committee will meet before the next board meeting to gather detailed information on the costs of the home and house plans. They will try to submit a final package for approval at the March board meeting so bids can be taken.

In other news from last week’s meeting, the board:

•Approved the VHS Senior Class’s request to use a school bus for the senior trip to Missoula on March 8-10. The senior class will pay the cost of the bus driver, fuel and all other expenses. Senior class members Emily Malinak and Keegan Widhalm presented the request to the board.

•Heard from trustees Jeremy Curry and Connelly, who serve on district’s Negotiations Committee, they will be presenting the proposed 2014-16 certified staff negotiated agreement at the next meeting for board approval.

•Accepted the resignation of head cook Stephanie Sullivan.

•Approved the hiring of the following junior high coaches for this season-Robert M. Widhalm, assistant junior high boys basketball; Carla Hauk, head junior high girls basketball; Emily Breding, assistant junior high girls basketball.

•Tabled discussion on the value of setting a minimum number of participants in order for a sport to be offered.

•Voted to keep the number of trustees serving on the board at five. Due to the new census figures, the Valier School District is only required to have three trustees, but may vote to keep the current number, which they did.

•Approved the 2014-15 contract with Artful Dodger Bus Co.

•Heard Hauk’s superintendent’s report, which included information on teacher training for pupil-instruction related (PIR) day, the Aim Higher program. Jackie Christiaens’ principal’s report included updates on the Common Core and “I Love to Read” activities. Also reporting was Cory Collison with updates on the student activities.

•Set the date of the next board meeting as Tuesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. in the high school library
