The Valier Panthers girls basketball squad closed out the regular season with a 1-1 weekend, defeating Dutton/Brady while falling to Cascade. The Lady Panthers head into this weekend’s District Tournament in Cascade as the No. 2 seed and will take on Sunburst at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Friday against Cascade the Panthers led 18-13 after the first quarter. Both teams went cold in the second stanza, combining for just eight points, and the Panthers led 22-17 at the half. Cascade outscored Valier 33-22 in the second half to take the 50-44 victory.
Loni Orcutt and Emma Valdez led the offense with ten points each followed by Erica Ramsey with nine. Kinley Kovatch scored six points in the loss, Hannah Monroe and Hylee Layne scored three points each, Hannah St. Goddard scored two points and Natalee St. Goddard rounded out the scoring with a free throw.
Saturday against Dutton/Brady the Panthers led 19-12 after the first quarter. Valier outscored the DiamondBacks 17-9 in the second stanza and led 36-21 at the half. The Panthers outscored Dutton/Brady 25-17 in the second half and cruised to the 61-38 win.
Orcutt led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points followed by Valdez with ten. Hannah and Natalee St. Goddard scored eight points each, Ramsey scored seven, Kovatch and Layne tallied six apiece and Monroe rounded out the scoring with four points.
