Nick Kuka, who graduated from Valier High School, recently won the Big Top Idol contest in Wisconsin.

When Nick Kuka moved to Washburn, Wis., he had no plans to participate in music competitions. His plans changed on a whim when he discovered Big Top Idol, a vocal contest sponsored by Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua. Nick moved his family to Washburn in 2019 where he teaches K-12 Music and Middle and High School Choir.

“I heard about the contest when we were getting ready to visit Valier this summer. I sent off my two audition songs before we left,” explained Nick, who is the son of Tom and Linda Kuka.

“I did it for fun. I’d never done anything like that before,” said Nick. He donated his $500 winnings to his current high school music program to help with travel field trips and other little extras.
