Last weekend the Sunburst Refiners boys basketball team traveled to Valier on Friday, Jan. 3, to take on the Panthers. Despite a slow offensive night, the Refiners were able to rely on their defense and defeat the Panthers 45-27. On Saturday, Augusta came to Sunburst, and the Refiners jumped on them early and put the Elks away 70-20.
Sunburst took a 12-5 advantage after the first quarter, and extended their halftime lead to 26-13. The third quarter the Refiners offense struggled, only scoring six, but came back in the fourth to score 13 to take a 45-27 win.
Scoring for the Refiners were Stanley Jarvis with 19, Jaden Koon with 13, Josh Kearns with 11, and Grady Kerfoot with 2.
“On Friday, we shot the ball poorly and couldn’t take advantage of some of the turnovers we were able to gather. But I was proud of the boys for continuing to compete on the defensive end of the floor and give ourselves a chance to win,” recapped head coach Nate Aschim.
Saturday Sunburst’s offense exploded out the gate with 25 unanswered points, and took a 43-10 advantage into the locker room. Sunburst continued on outscoring Augusta 27-10 in the second half.
Scoring for the Refiners were Jarvis with 14, Koon with 11, Blake Smylie with 9, Conlan Kerfoot with 7, Cade Hanson, Wyatt Manthey and Connor Sullivan had 6, Kearns had 5, John Buckley had 4, and Grady Kerfoot had 2.
Coach Aschim said, “Saturday we got out to an early lead and were able to get a lot of play time for everyone on the team. It was a great overall team effort and those games are always fun to coach.”
He added, “Overall, I was happy to get through the weekend with two more conference wins. We bounced back well from a poor performance Friday and fixed some problems Saturday. We just want to stay focused on improving every weekend.”
The Refiners are 6-0 overall right now and head to Centerville for a non-conference battle with the Miners on Thursday before hosting Heart Butte on Friday. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and 8 p.m. on Friday.
