The Shelby Coyotes traveled to Missoula to compete in the Mountain West Classic and coach Caydon Keller was happy with the results.

Aiyana Franco and Aisha Munson competed in the JV race, and finished with times of 26:14.97 and 28:14.94, respectively.

“There were a total of 371 runners in the JV girl’s race,” Keller said. “Aiyana came out and ran a career record and placed in the top half of the competitors. Aisha improved upon her time from last week and also her time compared to last year at the Mountain West Classic. I thought the competition from the race brought out the best of both Aisha and Aiyana.”

Nathan Benjamin ran a 21:20.16 and placed 194, and Mason Lamb ran a 22:07.14 and placed 255 in the boys JV race.

“There were a total of 485 competitors in the boys JV race,” Keller said. “Nathan ran a season best for the year at the race and finished where he has had his sights on all year. Mason ran a smart race and maintained his time from last week. Both Mason and Nathan placed well in a meet where there is stiff competition.”

Allan Flores competed in the varsity race and ran a 18:53.65 to place 206.

“There were 415 total competitors in the boys varsity race,” Keller said. “Allan set the school record for a 5-kilometer race with his performance this week. Since 2017, Montana races have been 5 kilometers; prior to 2017 races were 3 miles. Allan placed in top half as well.

“This week marks about the halfway point of the season, and we are really pleased with how the team has progressed to this point. Our runners showed up and competed with some of the best that the Northwest has to offer with teams from Washington, Idaho and Montana in attendance. The teams look forward to the next challenge at Great Falls Invitational at the Anaconda Hills Golf Course on Sept. 23 starting at 2:00 pm. The Great Falls Invitational is typically the hardest race of the year due to the rolling hills, so the Coyotes will look forward to working on conquering hills this week during practice.”
