The Sunburst girls basketball team lost two close games in last week’s district tourney and saw their season come to an end. They were defeated by Simms, 60-53, and lost a heartbreaker to Heart Butte, 45-43.
Sunburst came in the No. 7 seed and took on the No. 2 Simms Tigers in opening round action of the tourney Wednesday in Shelby. Sunburst was down big early, trailing 19-1 before they finally went on a little run and started closing the gap. Sunburst was down 33-17 at half-time. By the end of the third, the Refiners had cut the lead to nine points, trailing 41-32. Sunburst finished the game down by seven, 60-53.
The Refiners had four players in double figures. Brooke Holland and Jeena Alborano led the team with 14 each, followed by Annika Furr 13, and Claire Bucklin 10. Laura Meyer chipped in two.
Thursday morning Sunburst played Heart Butte in loser-out action. This was a close battle all the way through. They played a very close and physical game. After the first quarter, Sunburst was trailing 10-7. Half-time found the Refiners down 20-18. Sunburst was outscored by one in the third, leaving the Refiners down 33-30. The game was evenly played in the fourth with the Refiners taking the loss, 45-43.
“I was proud of the girls for coming back the day after a loss like that to Simms and fighting as hard as they did,” said coach Alex Aschim.
Scoring for the Refiners were Alborano 15, Holland 10, Furr nine, Bucklin six, Bailey Postma two, and Laura Meyer one.
“While we didn’t get the outcome we wanted, I was so proud of the way the girls fought. I’m looking forward to getting these girls in the gym this summer to see what we can accomplish next year. We don’t graduate anyone, so I’m anxious to see what next year holds for us,” concluded Aschim.
