Sunburst freshman Annika Furr drives past Kylie Christiaens of Valier Friday night during conference basketball action in Valier.

The Sunburst girls basketball team traveled to Valier on Friday, and lost a close game 51-46, and then hosted Augusta Saturday and came up short 65-22.

Against Valier, the Refiners started slow, trailing 6-19 after the first quarter. Sunburst fought back the rest of the game and tied the score in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t quite pull out the victory.

Scoring for Sunburst were Annika Furr with 15, Brooke Holland with 11, Jeena Alborano and Mackenzie Wilson with 6, Tara Robbins with 3, and Laura Meyer, and Bailey Postma with 2.

“Friday night we ended up in a pretty close game with Valier. Unfortunately, we found ourselves down 19-6 after the first quarter. We did make a pretty big run, outscoring them 21-13 in the 3rd quarter. We put them on the line too much, though, and they ended up beating us 51-46. We didn’t help ourselves in the game, making only 6 of 16 on free throws,” said coach Alex Aschim.

Saturday the Refiners battled Augusta well in the first half only trailing by nine, 23-14. Augusta took off in the second half outscoring Sunburst 42-9 in the second half.

Coach Aschim commented, “Saturday we played pretty tough in the first half. We only found ourselves down by 9 at half. Third quarter was rough, to say the least. We got outscored 27-3, and ultimately lost the game 65-22. I think we are still kind of figuring out how to put two physical games in a row together.”

Scoring for the Refiners were Alborano and Postma with 6 each, Furr contributed 4, Holland had 3, and Megan Hout had 1.

This week Sunburst will play in Centerville on Thursday, starting at 6 p.m.,  and will be home against Heart Butte on Friday, starting at 6:30 p.m.
