Last weekend the Sunburst Refiners boys basketball team faced off against the Dutton/Brady Diamondbacks on Friday, losing a close one 38-34, before hosting the Badgers of Cascade on Saturday, and falling 60-33.

On Friday Sunburst dug themselves an early hole, trailing 15-4. The Refiners cut the deficit to one point at the half.  Unfortunately, they fell behind a little too far in the third quarter and dropped the game 38-34.

“The kids battled extremely hard, but couldn’t quite cover the three-point line well enough, giving up nine threes in the loss,” said coach Nate Aschim. Scoring for the Refiners were Cade Hanson 10, Josh Kearns nine, Jaden Koon eight, and John Buckley seven.

Saturday the Refiners stayed close in the first half, trailing 11-9 at the end of the first, and 24-16 at the half. Cascade took off in the second half, extending the lead and winning 60-33.

“On Saturday, once again we battled well for most of the first half.  But then Cascade used a huge second half, outscoring us 36-17, to defeat us 60-33.  It was a disappointing loss, but Cascade did a lot of things to get us out of sorts and took advantage by making shots,” said Aschim.

Scoring for the Refiners were Hanson, Kearns and Grady Kerfoot with seven each, Koon five, Wyatt Manthey three, Buckley and Matthew Hesla two each.

“Overall it was a difficult weekend for us, but I feel the guys had played extremely hard and fought through both games.  I was proud of the effort.  Hopefully this week will be the week we get back on track,” concluded Aschim.

Friday the Refiners host Valier at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday they will travel to Augusta for a 4 p.m. game.
