Sunburst junior Jeena Alborano controls the ball while teammate Jodi Hout charges the net.

The Sunburst volleyball team is the third week of the season, and they have already matched their win total from last year. Sunburst had a good week, defeating Dutton/Brady and Heart Butte both in three straight games, before losing to Augusta in five.

The Sunburst team consists of one senior, Jodi Hout; five juniors, Laura Meyer, Jeena Alborano, Mackinzie Wilson, Briana Robins, and Bailey Postma; one sophomore, Anna Wedel; and four freshmen, Annika Furr, Tara Robins, Megan Hout, and Paige Head.

Hout, Alborano, Wilson, and Meyer, return as starters for Coach Kortnee Pace. Coach Pace feels the team was rounding into shape towards the end of the season last year, and believes they will build on that and have a competitive year. “The girls have been working hard to improve and get better,” she stated.

Tuesday, Sept. 10, the Refiners defeated Heart Butte in straight sets 25-10, 25-13, and 25-14. Alborano had 10 of the teams 20 kills, and Briana Robins led the team with 12 assists.

Thursday, Sept. 14, the Refiners also defeated Dutton/Brady in three sets, 25-11, 25-10, and 25-17. Alborano again led the team in kills with nine, and Robins added 11 assists. Wilson had a team high three aces.

Sept. 15 the Refiners hosted Augusta for homecoming, and jumped out to a two games to one lead, 25-21, 10-25, and 25-23, but lost the final two games 14-25, and 8-15, to lose the match.

The Refiners were once again led in kills by Aborano with six, Robins with 12 assists, and Wilson with four blocks.

Coach Pace was impressed with the play she saw last week, especially the ability to keep the ball from hitting the floor. “We only had eight dropped balls during the Augusta match,” she stated, adding, “I am very impressed with the effort and motivation these kids have shown, which will help create wins the rest of the year.”

The Refiners played Valier on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and host CJI on Friday, Sept. 20, both games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
