The Shelby Lady Coyotes volleyball team traveled to Fairfield to battle the Eagles, and played a great match despite getting off to a slow start. They dropped set one to the Eagles 18-25, but fought back defeating them 25-16, 28-26, and 25-17.
Leading the way for the Coyotes was Kendall Anderson with three serving aces followed by Brook Luly and Maddison Underdal with two each. Bailey Johnson added one to round out the eight aces for the team.
Brielle Aklestad also had a great night behind the service line, serving 18-for-18 in the court. The team served an outstanding 96% accuracy.
Although the team struggled a bit with the aggressive serves from the Eagles, they were able to pass defensively well enough to drop in 28 team kills. Underdal led the team with 11 kills, followed by Aklestad with six. Assisting them were Johnson with 12 assists and Luly with 7.
Defensively, Underdahl led the team with eight digs, followed by seven from Johnson. The Johnson and Underdal team were also active at the net with four and three blocks respectively.
Coach Jessica Brusven was proud of the way the girls picked things up after the slow start, moving better and working together. Fundamentally, the team has made some great improvements, especially with their set selection and making better decisions at the net.
Friday evening, the Lady Coyotes took on the Rocky Boy Morning Stars, defeating them 25-17, 25-15, and 25-11.
At the serving line, the team finished the match with 12 aces. Brogan McAllister and Johnson contributed four each, followed by Alexis McCracken with two and Avery Hoover with one. Johnson served a fantastic 20 for 20 behind the line.
At the net, Underdal put down nine kills, while Johnson put down six of the team’s 27 for the match. Assisting the attacks were Johnson and Luly, with 14 and 11 sets respectively.
Defensively, Hoover led the team with four digs. Reese Whitted, Anderson, and Luly added three each.
As a team, Coach Brusven was very pleased with the way the team passed the ball, giving a lot of opportunities to work on some different attacks. She also felt the girls really attacked the ball well.
Coach Brusven said the team definitely has some things to work on fundamentally, before they take on the Choteau Bulldogs this week during Homecoming. But overall, the team executed well during both matches.
The C squad and JV also made some great improvements in their respective matches, despite falling to the Eagles 0-3 and 1-3. They both defeated the Morning Stars on the home court Friday night.
The Lady Coyotes will take on Choteau on Thursday evening as part of the Homecoming festivities.
