The Sunburst girls basketball team split a pair of games before the Christmas break, beating Dutton/Brady 46-22 and falling to Cascade 57-29. 

The Refiners took charge early in the Dec. 19 game, jumping out to an 18-8 first quarter lead. Coach Alex Aschim felt the girls came out strong and played well the whole night. The Refiners ended the half with a 29-15 advantage. 

Sunburst started the second half holding Dutton/Brady to zero points in the third quarter and finished the game on an 11-7 run to claim the 46-22 victory. 

 “I had all but one girl score, so our scoring was pretty balanced. I was really happy with how hard the girls played,” said Coach Aschim. 

Scoring for the Refiners were Brooke Holland 13, Annika Furr and, Claire Bucklin each had 7, Jeena Alborano 6, Bailey Postma 4, Mackenzie Wilson 3, Tara Robbins, Megan Hout, and Nikki Nau rounded out the scoring with two apiece.

Dec. 20 the Refiners lost to the Badgers of Cascade, 57-29/ Sunburst stayed close to the Badgers in the first quarter, trailing 12-9. Cascade took an 11-point lead into the half leading 27-16. Sunburst fought back, outscoring Cascade by three in the third, but Cascade took over in the final quarter of play. 

 Coach Aschim felt the team did pretty good the first three quarters, but got outscored by 20 in the fourth. “We made some silly mistakes Friday night, and that didn’t help.”

Scoring for the Refiners Friday were Holland 11, Alborano 6, Wilson 5, Robins 4, and Bucklin 2. 

Sunburst will play again Jan. 3 in Valier and will host Augusta on Jan. 4. Game times are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
