The Shelby Coyote Wrestlers traveled to Cascade this past weekend to participate in the annual Cascade Invitational. Only four Coyotes graced the mats in the competition, but walked away with two placers. The team also placed 14th out of 23 teams at the competition.
Harold Miller (132 lbs), Bryant Mertz (160 lbs), Cameron Brusven (170lbs) and Jacob Kingsolver (HWT) were the line-up for the weekend.
Miller, a sophomore, lost his first bout to Trentin Walker, of Whitehall, by decision 7-6 in a tough fought battle. Bouncing back, Miller went on to win his second match by injury default against the second seeded Riley Richtmyer, of Broadwater/Townsend. Miller would then end his day, losing by decision 7-4 to Michael Leach of Simms.
Mertz, a sophomore, won his first match over Joey Riehl, of Jefferson/Boulder, by fall in :57. In the quarter-finals, Mertz lost by fall in :32 to Colt Burns, of Broadwater/Townsend, placing him in the consolation bracket. Mertz ended his tournament with a loss by fall to Brock McDaid, also of Broadwater, in :38.
Brusven, a sophomore, started off the day with an impressive win by decision over senior Garrit Weeda, of Manhattan, 5-1. In the quarter-final match, Brusven won by fall over Samuel Mishler, of Simms, in :58. In the semi-finals, Brusven would square off with number one seed, Caden Crowell. Crowell would go on to win the match in the final seconds by decision, 10-9, and would eventually go on to win the 170 lb weight class. In his first consolation match, Brusven matched up with Cylar Taylor, of White Sulphur Springs. In another tightly contested match, Brusven would lose by decision, 5-4, placing him in the fifth/sixth place finals. He would eventually place fifth by defeating the second seed, Justin Bergstad, of Broadwater, by fall in 1:34.
Jacob Kingsolver, also a sophomore, was the number three seed at heavyweight in the 32-man bracket. Kingsolver pinned his way to the finals, defeating Kaydon Eierdam of Powell County/Deer Lodge, in 1:09, Jake Whaley of Anaconda in 1:00 and the second seeded Brock Hanford, of Fort Benton/Big Sandy, in 4:00. In the finals match, Kingsolver lost to the first seeded and state place winner, Jadon Lamb, of Broadwater by fall in 1:00.
