The Sunburst Refiners opened their season on the road Saturday, Aug. 31 in White Sulphur Springs, falling 39-14.
Coach Jason Hanson felt the kids played a pretty good first game. They were able to move the ball in the first half on the ground, but were unable to score any points.
The team made some adjustments at half time, and Cade Hanson connected with Stanley Jarvis for 35 yards, and the first score of the season. Jarvis later scored on a three yard run in the fourth quarter. Coach Hanson felt Cole Johnson and Blake Smiley carried the ball well. Hanson also praised Assistant Coach Scottie Bye for preparing the defense for the game.
Saturday, Sept. 7, the Refiners hosted a very tough Hot Springs team, losing 52-6.
The Refiners were able to move the ball on the ground, but their passing game couldn’t get any traction, especially in third down situations.
The team found the end zone, when Jarvis broke loose for a 44-yard score. The defense made some good stops at times, but missed some coverage assignments, which led to big plays for Hot Springs.
Coach Hanson said, “We will continue to work hard and hopefully improve week to week.”
Sunburst will host Geraldine/Highwaood Rivals for homecoming this Friday. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
