The Sunburst Lady Refiners hosted both Dutton/Brady on Friday and Cascade on Saturday. Friday the Refiners defeated Dutton/Brady, 48-21, but on Saturday they fell to the Badgers, 61-38.

Friday the Refiners came out of the gate strong. After one quarter they were up 11-4, and built the lead to 23-7 at the half. Sunburst continued to dominate in the third, extending the lead to 38-11.  The final score was 48-21 in favor of the Refiners.

“We shot the ball really well, scoring five three pointers. I was proud of how fast we came out and that we never looked back,” said coach Alex Aschim.  “We kind of fought sickness this week with multiple kids being out of school with a nasty bug. So, we tried to keep our kids healthy this week.”

Scoring for the Refiners were Claire Bucklin 18, Annika Furr 13, Jeena Alborano 11, Mackenzie Wilson, Nikki Nau, and Laura Meyer two each.

Saturday the Refiners ran into a team that controlled the boards, and found themselves in trouble. They trailed 10-6 at the end of the first quarter, and were down 25-16 at the half. Sunburst ended up losing 61-38.

“Saturday we kind of struggled on the boards and that killed us. They just got too many second, third, fourth opportunities on the offensive end. We ended up losing 61-38 which wasn’t great, but it was an improvement from last time we saw them,” said Aschim.

Scoring for Sunburst were Alborano 17, Bucklin eight, Furr six, Postma four, Meyer two, and Mickaela Vento one.

Sunburst is currently sixth in the conference, with a 3-6 record.

Sunburst will host Valier on Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday the team will travel to Augusta for a 2:30 p.m. game.
