The past year has been an unprecedented challenge, for everyone. While many have persevered and are still here, there are those who did not make it to see the final days of 2020. As we move into 2021 with hopes for a better year it is also time to take a few moments to remember all those who are no longer with us. Please know you are not alone in your grief. They are missed, they are loved and they will be remembered.

Patrick Iden Watkins, 80, passed away on Jan. 1, 2020.

Darlene Mae Beach, 70, Jan. 1, 2020. Darlene was a lifelong Shelby resident, an active Ladies Auxiliary Post member, an avid baker who shared her delicious goods with the community and a talented knitter who made blankets for the Shriner’s Hospital.

James Michael Harwood, 72, Feb. 18, 2020. James was a long-time Shelby resident and very active in the community as an independent petroleum land man, Jaycee member, Exalted Ruler of the Elks and leading member of American Legion Post #43.

Sonja Fjeld Wilson, 74, Feb. 14, 2020. Sonja grew up in Shelby, an accomplished pianist and singer who was accepted into Julliard but chose to study education. Sonja enjoyed a nomadic life with her husband but eventually returned back to Shelby where she and Mark owned the Sherlock Motel.

Leonard Matteson, 88, March 31, 2020. Leonard quietly passed away in the farm home he was raised in north of Galata. Not only a farmer, Leonard was well-known throughout Montana and Alberta through his auction business as “Jabbering Swede” Matteson.

Benno Michael Ober, 76, April 24, 2020. Although he was a lifetime Fairfield Eagle fan, Mr. Ober also faithfully cheered for the Coyotes as he taught middle school math in Shelby for 31 years. He tirelessly served his community as a teacher, a City Councilman for 14 years and a Toole County Commissioner for 18 years.

Harry J. Benjamin, 88, May 11, 2020. Harry was a lifelong Toole County resident who devoted his time and talents to his family and members of his community. While Harry will always be remembered for many different things by many different people, his final contribution to the community was one of which he was very proud of and intended to bring smiles to the faces of many long after his death, the Carousel Rest Area of Shelby.

Laila Iverson Lindberg, 96, July 11, 2020. Laila moved to Shelby in 1965 and taught piano lessons to hundreds of students for over 60 years. She was also the church organist at Golden West and St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, playing for countless weddings and funerals over the years. Laila’s legacy lives on as she touched many lives through her love of music and commitment to the performing arts.

Robert John Appley, 82, Aug. 9, 2020. Bob was born and raised in Toole County and was a legend in his own right. In 1969 Bob and Hattie moved into Shelby from the farm and Bob opened Appley Repair and made a living out of a hobby he loved, working on cars. Bob operated the shop with his nephew, Tom, for over 30 years, making history there when he built the famous “Fam car,” which he could be found driving all over town due to contracting transverse myelitis, which confined him to a wheelchair for 21 years.

Thomas Richard Chisholm, 90, Sept. 16, 2020. In 1984, Tom and his brother, Don, came to Shelby to Shelby to build the hospital and never left. Together the two started Hi Line Masonry, which is still in business today.

Helen Arnold, 106, Oct. 4, 2020. Helen was born in 1913 in Fowler, Mont. She never went far from the Golden Triangle, raising her children in Brady and moving to Shelby in 2007 to be closer to her daughter.

Barbara “Barb” Miller, 68, Oct. 3, 2020. Barb moved to Shelby from Havre in 1971 where she met her husband, Ron, and raised her three sons. Barb worked as a nurse for the Toole County Hospital and Clinic for over 25 years. She also served as an EMT in Shelby for over 20 years.

Gregory Ben “Greg” Taylor, 60, Nov. 9, 2020. Greg was born and raised in Shelby and after college returned to work alongside his father, Ben, at the family business. Over the years Greg expanded the Ben Taylor, Inc., business to include BTI Feeds, Main Street Convenience, Ben Taylor Tire Shop and bulk plants in Sunburst, Valier, Cut Bank and Shelby. In 2014 Greg added Simons Petroleum in Shelby and Cut Bank to the BTI family.
