If you are one of many in the community wondering how to recognize and celebrate the Shelby High School graduating class of 2020 then you are in luck! On Friday, May 8, 2020, at 20:20 Friday Night Senior Lights will be taking place on the SHS football field. The event will get underway at 8:20 p.m. and wrap up at 8:40 and 20 seconds, hence 20:20 at 20:20.

“The administration brought the idea to a couple of seniors in leadership roles to help develop a plan,” said Shelby School Superintendent Elliott Crump. “This is recognition for them. The seniors will be at the event in their cars” to allow for social distancing.

The public is encouraged to drive over to the football field Friday evening and park around the sports complex.

As of press time, details were still being finalized. Music will be playing for the 20 minutes and 20 seconds with members of the community celebrating the Class of 2020.

“The public is encouraged to drive by and honk their horns around the field,” said Crump. “We will either play music at the field, selected by the students, or KSEN may do a special segment for all the 2020 graduates in the listening area during that time.”

With traditional commencement exercises unable to take place the school staff, students and administration are working hard to implement alternative ways for the community to celebrate this milestone and recognize the accomplishments of the 2020 class.

After a turbulent spring of online classes, no final season of spring sports and the other “usual” senior spring activities it is time to come together, in a way that we can, to recognize the milestone accomplished by these students.

Congratulations to the Class of 2020!
