The American Red Cross conducted a blood drive at the Shelby Civic Center on Feb. 2 with 69 donors registering and 69 productive units of blood obtained. This was a better than expected turnout as the goal was 57 units. Donors come from Shelby and the outlying areas.

Before we thank the volunteers who helped with this drive we need to recognize and thank the First Baptist Church who provided and served the luncheon for the previous drive on Dec. 8.

As usual, it takes many volunteers to make for a successful drive, besides the blood donors. We thank Marlene Howery, Helen Suta and Bonnie Wiegand for working at the registration desk. Cecil, Glenn and Nathan Benjamin did the cleanup and setup. St. Luke’s Lutheran Church provided and served the luncheon for the donors and workers. John Wiegand put up the street signs and KSEN radio did many advertising spots on the radio.

The next blood drive in Shelby will be on Thursday, April 6, at the Shelby Civic Center from noon to 6 p.m.

Appointments can be made at the American Red Cross website, www.redcross.org, or by calling 1-800-733-2767. Walk-ins are welcome.
