Betty was born near Suffolk to Martha LaFountain Waits and Lyle Ervin Waits. She spent her school years between Hilger, Lewistown and Winifred.

At 17-years-old, Betty caught the handsome eye of Phillip “Pat” Housel and married in 1950. They had seven beautiful children and eventually called Sweet Grass, Mont., home. In 1984, Pat passed away after 34 years of marriage.

Betty was very active in her community. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Border Unit 73 for 46 years, wrote articles for the Shelby Promoter, helped people with their income taxes, and owned a local store called “Betty’s Border Bargains.”

In 2004, Betty found true love again and married John Montgomery and had a beautiful home outside of Lewistown. In 2013, John passed away. Betty moved to Caslen Living Centers in late 2016 where she resided until her death.

Betty loved spending time with her friends and family and had a special talent of getting to know everyone she encountered. She looked forward to weekly card games with loved ones, remembered all birthdays and never missed an opportunity to write and send out poems, greeting cards, and letters to all she knew and loved. Betty treasured her holidays; no one went hungry! She was a habitual donator and loved to help others. Betty lived a long full life in which her Faith in God and the Catholic Church were unwavering.

She is survived by her son, Mike of Sunburst, Mont.; daughters, Trish (H) and Toni (Tom) of Lewistown; brother, Richard (Sherry) of Garabaldi, Ore.; sisters, Peggy of Lewistown,  Birdie (Roy) of Milwaukie, Ore., and Bobbie (Ted) of Sherwood, Ore.; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
