Joyce Irene Grinde, 83, passed away on Sept. 29, 2021, in Columbia Falls, Mont., three months after her beloved husband of 63 years, Jim, passed away June 30, 2021. No funeral is planned, a celebration will be held for family and friends at a later time. Donations can be made to the North Valley Hospital in Whitefish, Mont.
Joyce was born on Aug. 27, 1938, in Havre to Arthur and Ruth Matson, the third of one brother and four sisters. They spent most of their youth in Sweetgrass where her dad was an immigration officer. She attended middle and high school in Shelby, where she graduated and went onto attend college in Missoula.
She worked as the secretary to the Superintendent of Schools, Brickly Insurance and the East Butte TV Club. She later married Jim Grinde and brought three wonderful children into the world, Jerry, Judy and Jon. They all graduated from Shelby High School. She was very proud of her five grandchildren, Kassi Appenzeller, James Grinde, Kelsi Grinde, Andrew Grinde and Jake Grinde.
She is survived by sisters, Elaine Adkins and Jeanette Jochim.
Joyce is preceded in death by her parents; big brother, Jim Matson; two sisters, Mary Peterson and Shirley Christensen.
In her youth she was a pianist and quite a seamstress, she then dropped everything and became a golfer and was credited with four hole-in-ones. She spent her time being a good mother and golfing, gambling and gardening, along with traveling with Jim and friends. Then in her later years spending time between homes in Columbia Falls and Mesa, Ariz. She just wanted to have fun, and we think she did.
