Hazel Burd  Wolverine

Hazel Jean Burd Wolverine 66, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at the Blackfeet Community Hospital on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 in Browning.

A wake service was held at the Glacier Homes Community Center on March 23. Hazel’s funeral service was  March 26. Her wishes were to be cremated and laid to rest at a later date.

Hazel was born on Aug. 10, 1952, and was raised in Moccasin Flats. She was the youngest of six children born to Jim James Blackman and Mae Mary Weaselhead.

She began her education at five years old at Cut Bank Boarding School and later attended the Browning Public Schools until going to Busby Indian School in Busby until grade 10. Hazel completed her GED in Seattle, Wash., in 1974 and continued to pursue a college education with Blackfeet Community College toward pre-nursing.

Hazel’s employment included being employed as a city bus driver in Seattle for two years, as a bookkeeper with the IGA grocery store for eight years and served as a Home School Coordinator with the Browning Public Schools for three years.

Hazel’s true calling emerged in 1994 when she began working for the Blackfeet Emergency Medical Services as an Emergency Medical Responder. She went on to an Emergency Medical Technician-B in 2004 and became a certified nursing assistant in 2006. Hazel was employed by the Blackfeet Emergency Medical Services for 20 years. She achieved many certifications and recognitions for outstanding service to her community. She was recognized for her training with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for homeland security in assisting with disaster response.

She married Lester Leo (Tinyman) Wolverine in 1972 and made their home in Browning with their children. They also resided in Seattle for three years.

Hazel’s hobbies included having cookouts with her family, taking long drives with Leo, attending various activities supporting her grandchildren and playing at the casino.

She is survived by her husband Leo Wolverine; two daughters, June of Browning and Leonda and husband Cedric of Siksika Nation; stepson Leo Wolverine Jr. and wife Joanne of Browning. She was a special mom to Dale Wagner, Hailey Smith, Brianna Smith and numerous others who she welcomed into her home. She is survived by one sister Dianne Blackman Bird (Patrick) as well as many numerous nephews and nieces. She is lovingly survived by 10 grandchildren: Leslie Jo, Lance, Samuel, Kelsey, Jacey, Daniella, Blaine, Leo Thomas, Ashley, and Gabriel; and two great-grandchildren, Tanner and Lawrence.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Carl, Leroy and Merlin; and a sister, Carolyn (Bubbles). 

The family would like to thank the Benefis Hospital nursing staff, Northern Rockies Medical Center nursing staff in Cut Bank, Blackfeet Community Hospital, Blackfeet Emergency Medical Services and everyone who supported the family during this difficult time. Thank you and God bless.
