Sylvia Alice Carty, 92, a former Shelby and Devon area resident, died at Pacific Care Center, Hoquiam, Wash., Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019. There will be a gathering of the family later in the spring.
Sylvia was born in Devon, May 28, 1927, the daughter of Olai and Kari (Kvello) Wigen. She was raised in Montana, came to Ocosta, Wash., in 1965 and resided there until moving to Montesano, Wash., in 1971. She would later move to Hoquiam, Wash.
Sylvia had attended school in Galata and Shelby, graduating from Shelby High School in 1945. She went to Montana State University at Missoula for a year and got married to James Harold Carty on Sept. 1, 1946, in Devon. Sylvia would complete her teacher’s degree at MSU in 1964.
She taught school at Anacortes, Wash., in 1964-65 and in junior high and high school for Aberdeen, Wash. schools. She also was a partner in the Grayland Hardware store, Grayland, Wash., and had been a bookkeeper at the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Department in Montesano. She retired in the late 1990s.
She was a member of the Sons of Norway, Aberdeen and also enjoyed painting in watercolors and making greeting cards of pressed flowers. She played and taught piano and still found time to work in her garden.
Sylvia is survived by two sons, Michael (Barbara) Carty, Grayland, Wash., and Robert (Laura) Carty, Bremerton, Wash.; a daughter, Diana Lynn (Steve), Lightle, Lake Stevens, Wash.; and also five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 1996; a granddaughter, April Lea Carty; her brothers, Jurgen, Byron, Alton and Arthur Wigen; and her sisters, Cora Johansen and Olive Sparks.
