James “Jim” Irwin, 80, passed away peacefully in his home in Cut Bank Creek, Browning, Mont., on Dec. 14, 2019. Rosary was on Dec. 20 and funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 21.
James was born on Jan. 6, 1939 in Elbowoods, N.D., to his parents John Irwin Sr. and Gladys Smith Irwin. James grew up in Elbowoods on the Fort Berthold Reservation, going to school there and Flandreau, S.D.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1956. On Feb. 8, 1963 he married Patricia Ann Racine.
Over the years he worked for many establishments, including the BIA Road Dept., BIA Police Dept., Transportation for the schools, ranch hand, Blackfeet Police Department and Montana State Department of Transportation.
His hobbies included saddle bronc riding, following rodeos in North Dakota and Montana, football, fishing, hunting and visiting with friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patty; daughter, Tracy Edwards; great grandson, Rustin Edwards; Dillon Cole Wagner, Velma, John Jr., Roseanne Irwin, Sadie Bearstail and Phoebe Dixon.
He is survived by his children Evelyn Irwin, John Irwin, Jamie Irwin and Memoree Tatsey; his sisters, Sally White, Johanna WhiteBear, Ada Sharp, Doreen Russell and Alva Irwin Vivier; his 16 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.
