Chanda Whitney

On Saturday, April 20, 2019, Chanda DeLane (Johnston) Whitney passed away at age 51.

There will be a celebration of life for Chanda held at Ten Pin Alley, 962 Oilfield Ave., Shelby, on Friday, May 10 at 12 noon.

Chanda was born on Jan. 20, 1968 to Charles Johnston and Vicki (Davis) Wright at St. Elisabeth Hospital. She attended elementary school in Yakima, Wash., before moving to Moxee and attending East Valley schools, making lifelong friends and graduating with the class of 1986. On Thanksgiving, 1993 she gave birth to her son Chase and proved to be an exceptional mother. Chanda continued her education graduating from Yakima Valley College and getting her BA in Criminal Justice from CWU in Ellensburg, Wash.

Chanda and Chase moved to Shelby in 2002 to start her career with Customs and Border Protection at the Sweetgrass port of entry. She worked there until illness forced her to retire in September of last year. She made many friends, both at her workplace and in her community.

Chanda dealt with her cancer the same way she lived her life – fiercely and with courage and determination. She has left a huge, empty spot in all our lives and will be missed terribly.

Chanda is survived by son Chase McCubbins of Shelby; her cat Libby; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She is also survived by best friends beginning from childhood, Craig Sellers and Annie (Wolf) Moss.

Chanda was preceded in death by parents Chuck Johnston and Vicki Wright; and her grandparents.
