“It’s a really good squad,” Coach Dan Connelly said of the 2019-20 Runnin’ Indians basketball team. “They play an up-tempo style of basketball. They can press up and down, half court or full court. They’re one heck of a shooting team; anyone could light it up.”
While the team isn’t as tall as last year’s (6’7” Tyree Whitcomb graduated), there are many veterans and some promising newcomers in this year’s lineup. This year’s seniors include Deion Mad Plume, Chris Reevis, Latrell Bullchild, Riley Spoonhunter, Justin Burd and junior Blayne DeRoche. They are joined by Cody Carlson, Jordan Calf Looking and Joe Bullshoe.
“It’s a group that works extremely hard,” Coach Connelly said. “If the practices are any indication, it should be a fun season. What I did differently is that every kid, except Carlson and Calf Looking, played on varsity last year. I move the kids back and forth.”
This week, the Runnin’ Indians are off to Frenchtown for a pair of games. First, on Friday, Dec. 6, they play the host team at 7:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, Dec. 7, they play Hamilton at 4 p.m.
Coach Connelly notes Browning encountered both teams at the state tournament last year so he’s interested in seeing how his team matches up this year.
Hometown fans will get their first opportunity to catch the Runnin’ Indians at the BHS Tipi Dome on Saturday, Dec. 14, as they take on Polson. The C Squad plays at 11 a.m. at BHS, followed by the JVs at 12:30 p.m. and the varsity at 3:30 p.m.
