The Browning Runnin’ Indians basketball team returned from Christmas break to host Whitefish on Friday, Jan. 3, and handed them a 60-50 defeat. The next day they traveled to Shelby where they topped the Coyotes, 71-62.
Coach Dan Connelly noted the long break that preceded the Whitefish game and said health issues with some players had him mixing up the starting lineup. He said Riley Spoonhunter scored 12 points, and Chris Reevis came off the bench to score triples and dominate the boards. Luke Juneau also received praise for his long distance shooting.
In the away game against Shelby, Coach Connelly notes his team was up by 20 points about four minutes from the final buzzer when the Coyotes started hitting threes. “We’ve had trouble closing,” he said. “It was closer than it had to be.”
Riley Spoonhunter felt better on Saturday, contributing 28 points for Browning; Justin Burd had 12 points and eight steals; and Luke Juneau scored three triples. “They were a bigger team than ours,” Connelly said, “so we out-rebounded them.”
This week, the Runnin’ Indians host a pair of doubleheaders, beginning this Friday as Cut Bank comes to town. The JVs will play at 4:30 followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, Jan. 11, they host Libby. The C Squad and JVs will play at BHS at 12 and 1:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 4:30.
