Preston Iron Heart and Teslin Trombley were the top runners from Browning at the MHSA State Cross Country Championships in Missoula last weekend. The Browning boys placed seventh among 22 schools, led by Iron Heart and Jerdan Crawford. The Browning girls dealt with injuries that put them in 14th in team scoring, led by Teslin Trombley and Mecca Bullchild.

“I’m super happy because we’re improving,” Coach Roy McNabb said. “This is a huge improvement over every year prior. When I started we were near the bottom at state, but this has been a fun season. The weather cooperated all sea-son, and it’s the most fun because there’s been no COVID-19 and we’re growing in the right direction. The boys mostly all set PRs, so they went all out, and they’re still hungry to get better.”

Both Philip Sure Chief and Lebron Omeasoo ran their final seasons as seniors this year, but the remainder of this year’s team will return next fall.

Two of the Lady Indians suffered leg injuries late this year, with Mecca Bullchild injuring her calf and Kalani Sun Rhodes suffering a stress fracture, resulting in slower times. Jadie Butterfly and Mecca Bullchild will graduate this spring, having run their final cross country meets in high school.

Coach McNabb said he has some ideas for training this summer for next year’s team. And he emphasized the important role parent support has played in the progress the Browning athletes have made.

“The secret to our success is that the parents had our backs,” Coach McNabb said. “They brought water and really gave us the support we needed, and that’s what leads to titles.”
