Springtime is here, and for most residents on the reservation that means cleanup in and around your house. The weather cooperates every other day or so, and we are hoping that the weather will work with us May 19 - 26. This year the Blackfeet Reservation Community Clean-Up Week is scheduled for the third week of May. The past couple years we have been fortunate to have pleasant accommodating weather. Hopefully this year’s weather will be as willing. We considered last year’s clean up a success.

•We had 1,630 vehicles come across the scale at the Transfer Station.

•Forty trips were made to haul the waste.

•There were over 180 tons of garbage transported to Pondera County’s Northern Montana Joint landfill from the Browning Transfer Station.

•The average wait time for vehicles in line going over the scale at the Transfer Station was three to four minutes.

In years past we chose a community on the Reservation to assist in their cleanup efforts. In years past we have chosen Babb and Heart Butte. A Cleanup Crew was assembled with their primary objective being to clean a designated area within the community and assist elders with disposing bulky items on their properties. Based on prior site visits to these communities, there became an eye opening reality of “used needles” being randomly disposed of. Being aware of this situation, the Cleanup Crew received blood-borne pathogen training and certification. The training dealt with proper handling and disposal of the needles, as well as the procedure of dealing with accidental needle sticks.

This year Browning has been chosen as the community where the Cleanup Crew will be placed to assist with cleaning efforts. A crew will be assigned to areas that have been missed by other cleanup efforts and will be available to handle any situations involving collection and disposal of used needles.

Also, Blackfeet Solid Waste and several other tribal programs are currently in the planning stages of assigning which areas in the Browning community will be designated for tribal employees.

Browning residents can bring their trash to the Transfer Station at no charge during Cleanup Week. We will gladly accept bagged garbage, metal and wood. We will not be accepting construction and demolition debris such as shingles, sheetrock, etc. If you have any questions concerning acceptable or unacceptable items, we can be reached at 338-5702 or 7311.

In the outlying communities the large metal 40 yd. containers will be placed in designated areas. The cleanup schedule for Reservation communities is as follows.
