The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal to construct snow fences at nine locations near Browning, within the Blackfeet Nation. These locations have experienced historically significant snow drifting.

Specific locations include:

•U.S. Highway 2 near reference posts 213.3, 214.3, and 221.4

•U.S. Highway 89 near reference posts 5.8, 8.3, 8.9, 106.7, and 107.4

•Secondary Highway 464 near reference post 18.8

Proposed work includes construction of snow fence. The purpose of the project is to mitigate roadway snow drifting and associated road closures.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2022 depending on completion of design and availability of funds. Landowner easements will be required. MDT staff or representatives will contact all affected landowners prior to doing survey work on their land. Staff or representatives will again contact landowners prior to construction regarding property easements and temporary construction permits.
