The Cut Bank Lady Wolves came up short in their bid for a State Tournament trophy last weekend in Belgrade. The local diamond dwellers went 1-2 at the State Tournament, dropping their opening game before splitting a pair of loser out contests.
Cut Bank opened the tournament Thursday against Plains/Hot Springs and after a scoreless first inning, the Lady Wolves gave up two runs in the second inning to fall behind 2-0. Cut Bank trailed 7-0 midway through the sixth inning before scoring their first and only run of the contest before dropping the game 9-1.
Jazmine Spotted Bear was in the circle for the Lady Wolves and the senior gave up 10 hits and six earned runs to go along with seven strikeouts in the loss.
Sarah McDonough and Sam Burke led the Lady Wolves at the plate as each hit a double in the contest. Hannah Fetters, Jada Doore, Hailey Wahl, Sienna Spotted Bear and Brianne Murphy all tallied a single in the loss.
Cut Bank faced off with Shepherd in a Friday loser-out contest and the score was knotted up at 2-2 after the first inning. Shepherd scored three runs in the second inning and the Lady Wolves trailed 5-3 going into the third. Cut Bank got their offense rolling in the third inning, as they put up three runs and took a 6-5 lead. Cut Bank wouldn’t look back as the Lady Wolves outscored Shepherd 6-1 the rest of the way and cruised to the 12-6 victory.
Burke and Jazmine Spotted Bear led the Lady Wolves at the plate as each cranked out a home run to go along with a single. Fetters, Doore and Camille Bradley each went 3-4 from the plate, Wahl recorded two singles and Murphy and Sienna Spotted Bear each tallied a single as well.
Jazmine Spotted Bear pitched all seven innings for the Lady Wolves and gave up six hits and three earned runs to go with seven strikeouts in the win.
Cut Bank immediately squared off with Florence-Carlton following the Shepherd win and Cut Bank gave up four quick runs before responding with two of their own as they trailed 4-2 after the first. Errors hurt the Lady Wolves in the second inning as Florence put up six runs, the Lady Wolves answered with three runs in the bottom of the second but the deficit grew to 10-5. Cut Bank didn’t give up a run over the next two innings and put up three of their own to cut the lead to 10-8 going into the sixth inning. Florence took complete control in the top of the sixth inning, putting up 10 runs and Cut Bank had no answer as they ended their season with a 20-8 loss.
Fetters and Burke led the Lady Wolves’ offense as each recorded a double and a single. Bradley also hit a double in the loss while Doore, McDonough and Mariah Wahl each hit a single.
Jazmine Spotted Bear was in the circle and gave up 17 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out three batters.
The Lady Wolves ended the season with five players earning All-Conference recognition led by Fetters and Jazmine Spotted Bear. Both were named not only First Team All-Conference performers, but the duo earned All-State honors as well.
Burke, Doore and Sienna Spotted Bear each earned Second Team All-Conference honors for the 2019 season.
