The Valier Panthers football team dropped to 0-2 on the season following a 36-13 loss to Sunburst last weekend. The Panthers will look to pick up their first win of the season Saturday in Heart Butte.
The Panthers took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when Tyler VandenBos hit Brody Connelly on a 10-yard pass. The Refiners scored twice in the quarter and took a 15-6 lead into the second stanza. Neither team found the end zone in the second quarter and the Refiners held a nine-point advantage at the half. Connelly broke free up the sideline for a 60-yard touchdown run and pulled the Panthers within two points at 15-13 in the third quarter. That would be the final score for the Panthers as the Refiners scored three times in the period for the final 36-13 victory.
Head coach John Briggs pointed to Connelly as having a standout performance for the Panthers. On top of his two touchdowns the local junior also had some big defensive plays including an interception in the end zone to prevent a Refiner score.
“We are still a young team that’s learning how to win,” said the coach. “The three upperclassmen we do have are solid and ball out every week but we just don’t have enough experience at this point to get over the hump in tight games.”
Saturday’s kickoff in Heart Butte is slated for 1 p.m. Fans are not allowed but the game will be streamed on the NFHS website.
