The Sunburst Refiners opened their varsity football season with a win, defeating the Valier Panthers 36-13. 

Valier scored on their first possession, but the Refiners answered back on their first possession with a seven-yard run by Cade Hanson. Stanley Jarvis scored on a 43-yard run in the second quarter to put Sunburst up 16-6. The Refiners led the remainder of the game.

The second half saw Hanson throw a 37-yard touchdowns pass to Josh Kearns and then a 53-yard TD pass  to Jarvis to extend the Refiner lead. Jarvis added on a 70-yard run to end the game, giving the Refiners a 36-13 victory.

Jarvis lead the Refiners rushing attack with 135-yards on seven carries. Hanson was 7-13 throwing the ball for 183-yards. Grady Kerfoot came up with two key interceptions for the defense. 

 “Overall we were pretty balanced and I am pleased with our play for the first game,” said head coach Jason Hanson. 

The Refiners host North Star for Homecoming on Saturday, Sept. 12. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
