The Shelby Coyotes boys basketball team opened practice 2020-21 season on Dec. 7, with 14 athletes. They are returning 10 lettermen from last year’s state qualifying team. Two of those returners, senior Logan Leck and junior Rhett Reynolds, are all-conference and all state players.
Also returning for the team are seniors Kyler Cassel and Kyle Peltier. They will be joined by juniors Taylor Parsons, Aidan Torgerson, Kolby Lohr, and Garrett Hansen. Sophomores Bryce Lee and Trenton Emerson round out the returning lettermen. They will be joined by sophomore Tanner Deeble, and freshmen Hayden Schilling, Randon Richman, and Kyle McDermott.
Head coach Tom Reynolds will be joined again by assistant coaches Mike White and Ryan McDermott. Brennan Hayes is a new addition to the coaching staff.
Coach Reynolds expects an interesting conference this year. Fairfield, the defending co-State champs from last year, will be tough as well as Rocky Boy, who has been at the state tournament the last three years with the Coyotes.
The Coyotes will open the season on Saturday, Jan. 2, in Browning. Games will start at 2 p.m.. Shelby will have their first home game on Tuesday, Jan. 5, when they host Fairfield. Games will begin at 4:30 p.m.
The 2020-21 Shelby Coyotes girls basketball team is small in number but large in dedication. The Lady Coyotes will only field nine players this year, but head coach Mac McDermott likes their chances.
Shelby will return All-State Maddison Underdal for her senior season. Also returning are five letter winners, led by Vivi McDermott, Taylor Schilling, Blair Luly, Shelbee Correa, and Jori Clary. They will be joined by freshmen Bella Moss, Cami Blevins, and Delaney Clark.
Joining McDermott on the coaching staff will be Ryan McDermott, Kari Underdal, and Traci Richman.
McDermott expects the league will be competitive, headed by Fairfield who will have a new coach in Travis Schenk. “He was a great player and is a good coach,” said McDermott.
He also looks for Conrad and Choteau to be teams to watch out for. They have a lot of returning players, who played a lot last year,” said McDermott.
“Cut Bank head coach Brandon Kavanagh will have his team ready to go and Rocky Boy will have a quality squad. That being said, I like our chances,” said McDermott. “We have a small group, but they are dedicated, and work well together.”
Shelby will kick off their season on Friday, Jan. 2 when they host the Browning Indians. The game will start at 2 p.m. The Coyotes will then host the Fairfield Eagles on Jan. 5, and the Choteau Bulldogs on Jan. 8.
All games start at 4:30 p.m.
