Grady Kerfoot scores two fo the Refiners.

Last week the Sunburst boys basketball team only had two games, which they felt was a nice change of pace for the team. They played in Centerville on Friday and picked up a win. Saturday beat the Heart Butte Warriors in a battle of 10-C teams.

On Friday Sunburst had a hard time putting things together against the Miners. The Refiners really played hard and tried to make the right plays, but were just off a click which led to the offense struggling a little bit.  Sunburst did have a nice balance of scoring.

Coach Nate Aschim said, “I was really happy with the defensive effort though and we ended up winning 53-34.”

Scoring for Sunburst were, Cade Hanson 17, Josh Kearns 12, Jaden Koon 12, Stanley Jarvis 10, and Connor Sullivan two.

On Saturday, the Refiners hosted the Warriors in an important game in the 10-C standings. Heart Butte, as always, was up for the task and jumped out on Sunburst 15-7 after the first quarter.

Although the Refiners cut into the lead in the second quarter, the Warriors responded with a 5-0 run to end the quarter and took a 30-23 halftime lead into the locker rooms.

With some stingy defense and some timely scoring from Stanley Jarvis, Sunburst tied the game up by the end of the third stanza setting up for an exciting finish. In the fourth, Josh Kearns tossed in eight of his game high 18 and the Refiners pulled away from the Warriors to get the win 55-50.

Scoring for Sunburst were, Kearns 18, Jarvis 15, Hanson 11, Koon six, Sullivan five.

“Every time we play Heart Butte we know they are going to bring a level of intensity that we have to really work to match,” said Aschim. “I was proud of the guys for not folding the tents when things went poorly early, and they kept fighting.  It was a fun game that displayed two evenly matched teams and I think the crowd got their money’s worth.”

Aschim continued, “Having a full week of practice really helped out this week. We were able to focus on some small things that had been plaguing us throughout the year and try to fix them. I was so proud of the way the guys played.”

Ashim said Jaden Koon was really distributing the ball well and Cade Hanson started to take over inside. Josh Kearns and Stanley Jarvis hit some huge shots for us throughout the weekend, but it seemed like Connor Sullivan always found a bucket at a crucial time.

“Even though he didn’t find the scoring column, I felt that Grady Kerfoot really anchored our defense and made some plays that helped us come through. It was truly a team effort to get through these two games and give us a good boost heading into the final week,”  said Aschim.

Sunburst has four games this week. They were at home against Power on Tuesday. They will host Dutton/Brady and Power on  Thursday and Friday with games starting at 4 p.m.  On Saturday they will travel to Simms to finish the season. Games will start at 1 p.m.
