Cut Bank sophomore point guard Aliyah Cruz drives past Reagan Wetzel, Makenna Burke and Maddie Baker during the Lady Wolves scrimmage on Saturday.

The Cut Bank Lady Wolves will open their 2020-21 season Jan. 2 at home against the Harlem Lady Cats. The Lady Wolves lost two All-Conference post players from last year’s squad but return six letter winners including seniors Sienna Spotted Bear and Sadie Pepion.

Joining the senior duo on the varsity team this season will be juniors Jackie Waller and Tayleigh Running Fisher, sophomores Aliyah Cruz, Kendra Spotted Bear, Mariah Posey, Mackenzie Johnson and Madison Baker and freshman Makenna Burke.

The JV and C squad teams will feature juniors Taylor Grant and Roycelyn Yellow Owl, sophomores Hadley Barbie, Kalani Bender, Mekah Keller, Darci Littrell, Rae Miller, Hailey Skunkcap and Reagan Wetzel and freshmen Addisyn Harrell, Stella Overstreet, Braelyn Running Fisher, Kenzie Stiner and Katelyn Suta.

The Lady Wolves are led by Brandon Kavanagh and he is assisted by Barb Genger.

“On paper we are a very young team,” said Kavanagh. “But we return quite a few girls who got thrown into the fire last season and gained a lot of experience. We were fortunate to have a really great summer in the gym and these girls really put some work in on their individual games.”

Looking at the District 1B this season, Kavanagh said the league is as wide open as it has been in awhile.

“All roads in the 1B still go through Fairfield,” said the coach. “They’re going through a transition of replacing a great coach and great player, but they are always the team to beat. After that Choteau returns everyone, Shelby graduated a bunch of girls but Maddison Underdahl was an All-State player and a great piece to build around, Conrad returns most of their squad, Central should be improved and Rocky Boy is always in the hunt. I think we have as good of a chance as anyone to be up at the top of our league when it’s all said and done.”

Games on January 2 will tip off at 1 p.m. with boys JV, followed by girls JV at 2:30, boys varsity at 4:00 and the girls varsity game is slated to begin at 5:30.
