The Cut Bank grapplers had a busy opening weekend as the competed in the Havre Round Robin Tournament and the Havre Invitational last week. The Wolves boast their largest roster in many years out for wrestling this season for head coach Cody Fetters. 

Friday’s round robin tournament grouped athletes according to experience and skill and several Cut Bank wrestlers faced off with returning state champions and state placers from a season ago. 

Tristan Sydenstricker, Wyatt Berkram, Shane Barcus and Austin Vanek each won two matches on the day while Kierrin Rooney, Hunter Kennedy, Ethan Sullivan, Andrew Andersen, Brant Seewald and Wesley Omsberg each won one match. Caleb Simpson, Dakota Manecke, Jacob Hjartarson, Matt Larson, Mariah Wahl, Brock Barcus, Raice Strand, Giovanni Gibson, Jeremy Gallagher and Alen Nelson also competed Friday but were winless on the day. 

Saturday featured a bracketed tournament and six local grapplers finished on the podium led by Vanek’s second place finish at 160. Colten Barsness (145) and Larson (138) each placed third while Omsberg (HWT), Shane Barcus (132) and Simpson (126) all placed fourth. 

Rooney and Sydenstricker both went 2-2 at 120 while Kennedy went 1-2 in the weight class. Berkram went 3-2 at 126 while Manecke and Sullivan both went 0-2. Hjartarson went 0-2 at 132, Wahl was 0-2 at 138, Brock Barcus was 0-2 at 145, Strand and Seewald were both 0-2 at 152, Gibson was 0-3 at 182, Nelson went 0-2 at 285 and Gallagher was 2-2 at 285. 

Andersen also wrestled Saturday, winning his first match before having to withdraw after an injury. 

The Wolves will be in Superior this weekend for a mixer on Friday and an invitational on Saturday.
