The Valier Panthers picked up a 20-12 victory over North Star last Saturday to even their record at 1-1 and they sit at 1-0 in conference play.
The Knights got on the board first to take a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Panthers responded with Tyler VandenBos connecting with Cam Stoltz on a six-yard touchdown pass to tie the game up. Stoltz hit Ramos on the PAT and the Panthers went up 7-6 going into the second stanza.
North Star scored the only points of the second period but were unsuccessful on the PAT and led 12-7 at the half.
VandenBos hit Joe Ramos on a 28-yard pass play, and an unsuccessful PAT put the Panthers up 13-12 going into the fourth stanza.
In the final quarter the Panthers scored with 26 seconds left as Stoltz connected with Ramos on a 12 yard pass and Weslin Edwards capped off the scoring with a PAT run to give the local gridders the 20-12 victory.
“It was a fantastic team effort from the boys,” said head coach John Briggs. “Everyone had deserving moments to highlight but Cam Stoltz played out of his mind. Offensively, defensively and on special teams he just had an incredible effort. I also thought Joe Ramos and Weslin Edwards really stood out as well. We moved Wes from linebacker to nose guard to shut down their run game and he absolutely turned the game around for us on defense. Joe came up big in the passing game for us. The touchdown catch he had can only be described as an early Christmas present based on the window that ball dropped through, but kudos to him for his concentration and poise.”
The Panthers take the field again this week against the Bearcats of Denton/Geyser/Stanford/Grass Range/Winnett.
“We will hope to maintain our momentum and get some of our guys back as we were still down two starters last week,” said Briggs.
