Sunburst's Grady Kerfoot drives past Valier defender Rylee Gabbard in the team's 64-44 victory over the Panthers.

The Sunburst Refiners boys basketball team opened their season last week posting a 2-1 record. They defeated Valier 64-44 and then Centerville 68-28, before losing to Heart Butte 71-58.

The Refiners used a strong defensive effort to keep Valier at bay on Jan. 5, jumping out to a 31-22 lead at the half and never looking back. “I was really happy with our defensive effort and although I didn’t feel like we shot the ball well, however, we created enough opportunities to get the win,” said coach Nate Aschim.

Scoring for Sunburst were Stanley Jarvis 21, Cade Hanson 12, Connor Sullivan nine, Josh Kearns eight, Jaden Koon six, Grady Kerfoot four, and Conlan Kerfoot two.

Sunburst celebrated their seniors, Matthew Hesla, Stanley Jarvis, Jaden Koon, and Grady Kerfoot on Friday, Jan. 8. “We were lucky enough to have them all four years of high school ball and they have been a great group for our program,” said Aschim.

The Refiners came out with a ton of energy and jumped all over Centerville. They led 19-2 after the quarter.  Sunburst never looked back and claimed the win, 68-28.

Scoring for Sunburst were Jarvis 18, Kearns 16, Hanson 14, Koon six, Sullivan five, C. Kerfoot three, G. Kerfoot two, Wyatt Manthey two, and Connor Magalsky two.

On Saturday, Jan. 9, Sunburst came out a little flat footed against a very good Heart Butte team.  The Warriors shot the ball well and Sunburst ended up having to try to fight back the entire game.  Although the Refiners cut into the lead a number of times, they never got over the hump and the Warriors defeated the Refiners 71-58.

Scoring for Sunburst were, Jarvis 31, Kearns 11, Hanson seven, Kerfoot five, Koon three, and Sullivan 1.

“Overall, we were thrilled to get back out onto the floor and start our season,” said Aschim. “The guys have been waiting quite a while to get the opportunity to get out and run. Our bench did a great job generating some energy even with limited fans and that was cool to see.”

Aschim continued, “I really loved how hard we played, but coming out without the right energy on Saturday was a killer. Hopefully we can learn our lesson and continue to improve.”

Sunburst will be in Power on Friday, Jan. 15, with games starting at 4:30 p.m. The Refiners will host Simms on Saturday with games starting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, they will be in Great Falls to play Foothills Christian, starting at 6 p.m.
