Sunburst’s Stanley Jarvis and Valier’s Brett Stoltz battle for a loose ball Friday night in Valier

The Sunburst Refiners cagers won both their games this week, defeating Cascade 54-52 in a squeaker, and trouncing Valier 60-18.

The Refiners took on Cascade on Jan. 26 and held a 34-25 lead at halftime. Cascade slowly crept back in the game in the third and fourth quarter, but Sunburst hung on for the two-point win, 54-52.

Scoring for Sunburst were, Josh Kearns 17, Grady Kerfoot 13, Jaden Koon 11, Stanley Jarvis seven, Cade Hanson four, Connor Sullivan two.

Friday the Refiners flexed their muscles against the Panthers and jumped out to a 22-3 first quarter lead, and then extended it 34-13 at the half. Sunburst used stingy defense to limit Valier to five points in the second half to cruise to the 60-18 win.

Scoring for the Refiners were, Jarvis 23, Hanson 11, Koon six, G. Kerfoot five, Kearns and Conlan Kerfoot four, Connor Magalsky three, Sullivan and John Buckley two.

“Tuesday’s game came down to the wire once again. We had a good second quarter and built a lead, but once again the Badgers fought back into the game and had a shot to win it at the end,” said head coach Nate Aschim. “Thankfully for us, this time we hung on and got the win.”

Aschim continued, “Friday I loved our energy that we brought defensively. Our guys were engaged from the jump and really tried to make the Panthers uncomfortable. We played an unselfish offensive game that allowed us to top the 60-point mark for the first time since we came out of quarantine. That was nice to see and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Aschim added, ‘Overall, I feel like we are getting our legs back under us and starting to play better basketball. We need to keep it up in a competitive 10-C and keep fighting for position in the standings. It should be a fun next couple weeks.”

Sunburst will travel to Centerville on Friday with games starting at 4:30 p.m. Saturday they will host Heart Butte with games starting at 1 p.m.
