The Sunburst Refiners opened their season with a win defeating the Centerville Miners, 52-33, in last week’s action. Sunburst used the non-conference game as an opportunity to see where they were at with their offense and defense.
The Refiner defense started the scoring, by forcing a fumble near the Miner goal line which rolled into and out of the end zone for a safety. Midway through the first quarter, Cade Hanson found Josh Kearns for a 25-yard pass for a touchdown. Late in the first quarter, Hanson hit Conner Sullivan for a two-yard touchdown.
The Refiners scored three more times in the second quarter as Hanson hit Kearns for touchdown passes of 38 and 60 yards. Conlan Kerfoot rounded out the scoring when he punched it in from three-yards out. The Refiners took a 38-14 lead into the half.
Hanson opened the scoring in the third quarter with a 60-yard run to make the score 44-20. The Refiners’ final score came in the fourth quarter when Hanson hit Kearns for a seven-yard touchdown.
“We need to be better at blocking, have more focus and have less penalties moving forward,” said head coach Jason Hanson. “Defensively, I thought we did well against the run but our pass coverage was lacking at times and we will work to tighten up those areas before our next game.”
“Offensively, we did some things right but we have a lot of work to do before we meet Power/Dutton/Brady (PDB) at home on Friday,” said Hanson. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
