The Shelby Promoter reported in last week’s edition that President Biden’s executive order regarding private prison contracts would not affect Crossroads Correctional Center in Shelby. A recent email from CoreCivic Director of Public Affairs Amanda Gilchrist states their comment may have been premature.

“When I communicated with you last Wednesday (Jan. 27), I had shared with you that I felt the executive order would only impact privately-operated DOJ Federal Bureau of Prisons correctional facilities,” said the email from Gilchrist. “I had shared that prematurely since we’re not yet fully aware of how this executive order could impact each of our federal facilities. As previously stated, state contracts are not affected.”

Her email continued, “We strive to be a responsive resource to the media and if something is shared incorrectly, we want to address it immediately.”

Once more is known about the order and what facilities will be affected an update in regards to Shelby’s facility will be forthcoming.
