A crash near mile marker 16 of Highway 219 (Pendroy Road) took the life of a 17-year-old Briton Allan Bunnell of Shelby on Sunday, June 7. Bryant James Mertz and Mattew Christopher Riehl were passengers in the car.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, a Pontiac car with the three teens was eastbound when the car began to go to the right side of the road. Bunnell, the driver, overcorrected to the left, at which point the car went off the road and rolled, landing on its roof. Mertz and Bunnell were ejected from the vehicle and Bunnel died at the scene.

Mertz and Riehl, both from Shelby, were taken to a nearby hospital for injuries. Riehl has been discharged but Mertz remains hospitalized.

The MHP trooper said that it appears that speed may have been a factor in the crash. There is no indication that impaired driving was involved.
