Both the girls and boys wrestling teams from Browning made their way to Ronan for the Western Montana Duals last weekend and came away with five out of six wrestlers placing, seen with their bracket and medals.

“We had to leave quite a few kids home due to eligibility,” Browning wrestling coach Casey McDonald said of the Whitefish dual played on Thursday, Jan. 6, and the Western Montana Duals over the weekend in Ronan. “We brought six boys and placed five out six. We placed sixth as a team with just five kids.”

Not only were the wrestling Indians reduced in numbers, girls coach Mike Burns was unable to attend due to being isolated with COVID-19.

“Whitefish beat us in the dual Thursday,” Coach McDonald observed. “Considering how little of a line up we had, I was very impressed with everyone’s performance. The girls made leaps and bounds this week, and I was very proud of everyone on the team that competed.”

The two-day duals in Ronan began with team duals on Friday and individual duals on Saturday.

“They had team duals on the first day, and we didn’t do well with only five kids out of a 13-man bracket,” the coach said. “The second day was an individual tourney, and that’s where they placed.”

On the boys’ side, Quinton Campos took second at 138 pounds; Tahj Wells took fifth at 145; David Sharp was second at 160; Brendyn Whiteman was champion at 205; and James Whitcomb placed sixth at heavyweight.

“We also brought six girls with us, and they also placed five out of six,” Coach McDonald said.

Hailie Higgins took fourth place; Beatrice Kipp was fifth; Emily Williams claimed third, along with Sandra Augare; and Joslyn Grinsell was fifth.

This week, the Browning wrestlers make their way to Missoula for the Rocky Mountain Classic on Jan. 14-15.
