Browning’s Kiara Iron Heart turned in an outstanding performance last weekend at state, finishing second overall with a time of 20:07.

With eight runners available, the Browning cross country teams made their way to Missoula for the Class A State Championship. The top runner for the Browning girls, Kiara Iron Heart, ran a great race, claiming second place, while Jeremy Bockus was just one spot away from being named All-State.

“What an awesome season,” Coach Roy McNabb said. “I’m proud of every runner on the team - JV, varsity, doesn’t matter - this group showed a ton of heart and character. We took home some individual hardware with Kiara, and she gave the entire Class A girls a run for their money. Kiara was second overall in a strong field of talented runners, and I feel she can go way faster.” The girls team finished 13th with 369 points.

“On the boys side we hit a lot of PRs or came close to it. We missed all-state by one spot, but as a team we moved way up the ladder. We took ninth out of 26 teams so next year we’ll bring home some hardware,” the coach said. Browning tallied 263 points.

“Our work isn’t done,” McNabb continued. “The real work is off-season, and my goal is don’t wait until spring. Work all season in the weight room and do some conditioning with Coach Miller, but more than anything, keep it fun.”

Coach McNabb is not only pleased with the results of the state meet, but also with the leadership and camaraderie established among the younger and elder athletes.

“Our leadership at the junior and senior level pulled up some strong freshman and sophomores, and it shows,” he said. “We’re shaping up nicely on the boys and girls side, and we have the talent to win. The coaching staff is great, and any hiccups or issues we went through this season won’t happen again next season. The sky is the limit when you have a coaching staff, managers, runners, team, parents and community who support you.”
