Claire Bucklin

The Sunburst Refiners girls basketball team opened the season this past week, with seven athletes. They will once again be coached by Tyler Tharp, but he will not have an assistant with only seven players.

The team will consist of juniors Tara Robins and Megan Hout, sophomores Claire Bucklin and Nikki Nau, freshman Avani Champaneria, and eighth graders Ali Nau and Ella Samsal. Returning letter winners are Robins, Hout, Bucklin, and Nau.

Coach Tharp commented on the season saying, “I think Valier, Simms, and Cascade are going to be tough this year. However, there a quite a few teams returning a lot of good players so it is really a wide-open conference.”

Sunburst will open the season on Dec. 4 in Centerville for a 4 p.m. non-conference game. The Lady Refiners will then play in a pre-season tournament December 10-11 in Dutton. They will play Big Sandy and Centerville with games starting at 3 and 4:30 respectively. The Refiners will open the conference season with games the following weekend, Dec. 17 on the road against Dutton/Brady at 6 p.m., and Dec. 18 at home against Cascade at 2:30 p.m. The last game for the Refiners before Christmas break will be Tuesday, Dec. 21, when they host Augusta at 4 p.m.
