Hannah Monroe, above, placed second in the Cascade Invitational last weekend. She pinned one of her opponents on her way to the championship match in 16 seconds!

The Valier Panthers opened the 2021-22 season last weekend at the Cascade Badger Invitational and first year wrestler Hannah Monroe had a debut to remember as she went 2-1 and placed second in her bracket. Chantz Connelly also reached the podium as he placed fourth, going 2-2 at the tournament.

Monroe pinned Skye Smith of Cascade in 1:45 to open the tournament and then needed just 16 seconds to pin Ihte Stiffarm of Harlem to reach the finals. Cabry Taylor of White Sulphur Springs pinned Monroe in the championship, giving the local Panther a second place finish.

Connelly pinned his opening round opponent at 120 in 1:32 before falling to Ivar Radcliffe of Whitehall in the semifinal round. Connelly bounced back to pin Brody Smith of Arlee to reach the consolation final where he was pinned in the third period by Reed Zander of Boulder.

Zack Boyles went 0-2 on the day as he fell to Eli Zachary of Columbus and then Jace Ashley of Three Forks to end his weekend. Joe Ramos also went 0-2, falling to Kaluse Rauser of Townsend and Brady Armstrong of Boulder.

The Panthers will be back on the mat this weekend as they travel to Whitehall on Friday and Saturday.

After The Valierian went to print last week, an updated roster was received listing freshmen wrestlers Chantz Connelly and Zack Boyles.
