The Browning Runnin’ Indians basketball team had a tough first game at the Western A playoffs in Hamilton last weekend, playing Frenchtown to a tie in four quarters, only to come up short by a point, 71-70, in three overtime sessions. The loss put them into the loser-out bracket early. They came back with a strong 61-46 victory over Columbia Falls, but lost to Polson, 74-64. A final chance for a berth at state came with a second game against Frenchtown, but the Indians were on the short end of the 67-57 final score.

It looked like Browning would put Frenchtown away after the first half of play found the Indians ahead by eight points, but their opponents made up the difference for a tie after four quarters, 52-all. Both teams made points in two overtime periods, but Frenchtown scored eight against seven for Browning in the third OT for the one-point win.

Justice Johnson led with 14 points, followed by Jesse Carlson with 13, Brayds Vielle 12, Tayron Burdeau 10, Maurice Redhorn III nine, Joe Bullshoe and Tommy Running Rabbit five, and Ty’Shay Bear Medicine with four points.

Browning rallied in the second quarter against Columbia Falls the following day to gain a 12 point advantage going into halftime. They kept up the pressure through the remainder of the game to win by 15 points. Tommy Running Rabbit and Joe Bullshoe led with 10 points, followed by Justice Johnson, Tayron Burdeau and Maurice Redhorn III with five; Brayds Vielle and Ty’Shay Bear Medicine four; and Jesse Carlson, Jamerson Lazy Boy and Payton Grant with three points.

Browning had a strong first half against the Pirates but were still just four points ahead when Polson had a great third quarter to achieve a margin of victory. Tommy Running Rabbit led with 17 points, followed by Tayron Burdeau with 13, Jesse Carlson nine, Brayds Vielle six, Maurice Redhorn III five, Joe Bullshoe and Ty’Shay Bear Medicine four, and Jamerson Lazy Boy and Preston Iron Heart with three points.

Browning had another good first half against Frenchtown in the play-in game for state, but fell behind in the last two quarters. Joe Bullshoe led with 14 points, followed by Mau-rice Redhorn III with 10, Justice Johnson nine, Brayds Vielle eight, Tommy Running Rabbit and Tayron Burdeau five, Ty’Shay Bear Medicine four, and Jesse Carlson with two points.

The series spelled the finish of the 2021-22 season for the Runnin’ Indians, who are bidding farewell to five seniors - Justice Johnson, Tayron Burdeau, Jesse Carlson, Joe Bullshoe and Ty’Shay Bear Medicine.
