The Shelby Coyotes defeated Chester-Joplin-Inverness (CJI) last Friday night in a high scoring game, 74-46. The Coyotes are scheduled to play in Belt this Friday. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m., following the junior high football game which starts at 4:30 p.m.
In last week’s action, CJI scored first, but Shelby quickly answered with a 32-yard pass from Taylor Parsons to Rhett Reynolds. The catch would signal the beginning of a big game for Reynolds. He would go on to score five more touchdowns before the night was finished. “Rhett was a man amongst boys,” said head coach Mike White. “It was one of the best performances I’ve seen. He dominated in all the phases of the game.”
Parsons ran in the first of his two rushing touchdowns from 32-yards and Shelby ended the first quarter with a 14-8 lead.
Parsons opened the second quarter with a 16-yard run, and then threw 65 and 32-yard strikes to Reynolds to widen the Coyotes’ lead at the half.
Shelby opened the third quarter with a four-yard run by Bryce Lee, followed by another pass from Parsons to Reynolds to give the Coyotes a big lead. CJI then went on a run and took the lead from Shelby 46-44. Shelby dug in and Randon Richman picked off the CJI punter after a bad snap for a seven-yard pick six.
The Shelby defense did not relinquish a score in the fourth quarter and the Coyotes offensive scored three more touchdowns. Lee ran in from 25-yards, Reynolds caught a 27-yard pass, and then ran in a six-yard run to finish the game at 74-46.
“The kids showed a lot of grit in the fourth quarter. I felt they started to come together as a team for the first time this season,” said White. “Taylor really stepped up and led the team with his passing and running ability, which kept us in the game. Bryce, Randon, and Matao Padroni really excelled in the secondary,” he added.
“I am just really proud of the way kids responded with some adversity,” praised White.
