Cut Bank's Mariah Wahl, right, wrestles Kalispell Glacier's Maria Matosich in the 138 pound final of the MHSA Girl’s Wrestling State Tournament at Lockwood High School in Lockwood on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021.

State Champions Austin Vanek and Mariah Wahl are back on the mat this weekend in Havre as they lead the Cut Bank Wolves and Lady Wolves in their season opener. Vanek and Wahl will begin their title defense Friday at the Havre Invitational and both the boys and girls squads are looking to get the season started on the right foot. State trophy hopes are in the sights for both squads.

Vanek will be joined this year by fellow seniors Matt Larson and Ty Curry, who both finished fifth last year at state along with seniors Jeremy Gallagher, Raice Strand, Caleb Simpson, Hunter Kennedy, Wyatt Michaels, Hayden Hedges and Ashton Cassidy.

Juniors Tristan Sydenstricker, Ethan Sullivan, Ronald Grant and Bradin Murphy, sophomores Richard Schmidt and Kanon Branch welcome freshmen Alex Wahl and Kellan Cassidy to the Wolves’ program.  Schmidt, Gallgher, Branch and Murphy all competed at the state meet a season ago.

Wahl will be joined on the Lady Wolves squad this season by junior JJ Carter, who placed sixth last season at the State Tournament. Sophomore Haylee Fetters also competed at State last year and is looking to get on the podium this season. Joining the trio this year is sophomore Madisyn Price.

Paayton Branch, Avonlea Andersen and Nolahna Tanner are managers for the teams this season.
